Relationship between the President and the Prime Minister:

a. In a Parliamentary democracy, President is the head of the state who represents the country and Prime Minister is the head of the government. The real executive powers are vested with the Prime Minister and his Council of Ministers.

b. The constitution specifies that the President will act in accordance with the aid and advise of the Council of Ministers headed by the Prime Minister.


c. The President appoints the the leader of the majority party in the Lok Sabha as the Prime Minister. All the other council members are also appointed by the President on the advise of the Prime Minister.

d. It is the President who administers the oath to the office of the Prime Minister.

e. The Prime Minister acts as a link between the Cabinet and the President. He communicates all major decisions of the Cabinet to the President.

f. The Prime Minster is also the link between the Parliament and the President.
