Solution

(i). Transpiration pull is the main force responsible for the upward movement of water and minerals to the top of the tree. This pull is generated in xylem elements due to loss of water from the leaves by transpiration and this loss of water creates a negative hydrostatic pressure that exerts pulling force.
(ii). Root pressure is the positive pressure within the cells of the root system that causes sap to rise through a plant stem to the leaves. It is caused due to the active transport of various ions from the soil to the root xylem, followed by movement of water inside due to osmosis.
(ii). Root pressure is important, when soil moisture is high like at night or when transpiration is low during day.
