Question

1)Identify the oxidising agent and reducing agent in the following chemical equation:(i)SO2+2H2S FORMS 2H2O+3S(ii) 2H2 + O2 FORMS 2H2O

Solution

Oxidation is the gain of oxygen and loss of hydrogen while reduction is the gain of hydrogen and loss of oxygen. The species which gives oxygen or accepts hydrogen is called oxidizing agent whereas the species which gives hydrogen or accepts oxygen is reducing agent.
(i) SO2 + 2H2S 2H2O + 3S
Here, SO2 is oxidizing agent and H2S is reducing agent.

(ii) 2H2 + O2 2H2O
Here, H2 is reducing agent and O2 is oxidizing agent.
