Question

1. In case of banking of road and where friction exists , if friction acts outward i.e. v 1/2 then explain how

1. N increases when f remains same 2. N remains same while f decreases. 3. N increases and f decreases.

Solution

The force of friction depends upon the nature of surfaces in contact with each other and the conditions of surfaces(i.e. polish, roughness, wetness etc) as long as normal reaction and area of contact remains same.
In this case, force of friction F may increase or decrease and normal reaction R is constant
Force of friction (F) is directly proportional to normal reaction (R), as long as the nature of surface remains same.
F αR
Thus, in this case F increases if R increases.
Force of friction is independent of area of contact as long as normal reaction and nature of surface remains same.
