1) Show that the refractive indexof a medium 1 with respect to medium 2 is reciprocal to the refractive index of medium 2 with respect tp 1 i.e n12 = 1 /n21

It's quite simple, remember the definition of refractive index....

and

let n1 be the refractive index of medium 1

and n2 be the refractive index of medium 2

so, the refractive index of medium 1 with respect to medium 2 will be

n12 = n1 / n2 (1)

and

the refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 will be

n21 = n2 / n1 (2)

so, from (1) and (2), we get

n12 = 1 /n21

which is the required result.
