Question

1) the gravitational force betwwen two objects is F.how will this force change when: i) the distance between them is refuced to half,ii) the mass of one of the objects becomes four times.

2) what do we call the gravitational force between the earth and an object?

3) an object weighs 10N when measured on the surface of the earth .what would be its weight when measures on the surface of the moon?

Solution

We know, gravitational force is given by,

F = Gm1m2/r2

‘r’ is the distance between the masses ‘m1’ and ‘m2’.

i)

When ‘r’ is halves, the force becomes:

F/ = Gm1m2/(r/)2

=> F/ = Gm1m2/(r/2)2

=> F/ = 4F

Force increases by 4 times.

ii)

When mass of one object becomes four times, m1’’ = 4m1, then the force becomes:

F’’ = G(m1)m2/r2

=> F = G(4m1)m2/r2

=> F = 4F

Again the force becomes 4 times.
