1) what is meant by a pure substance? how can we check the purity of a substance?
2) fog and cloud both are colloidal in nature. how do they differ?
3) carbon is called an element, while carbon dioxide is a compound. give reasons.
3) When a substance is a pure chemical substance made up of only one kind of atom that cannot be separated into simpler substances we call it an element. Hence carbon is an element. (made up of one kind of atom).
A chemical compound is a pure chemical substance consisting of two or more different chemical elements that can be separated into simpler substances by chemical reactions. e.g. carbon dioxide formula CO2 (O=C=O, three atoms combined 2 different elements i.e. carbon and oxygen) and the atoms are held together by chemical bonds. Hence carbon dioxide is a compound.
