Carbon is the main component of coal.

If coal burns in sufficient amount of oxygen, it burns to produce carbon dioxide and water vapours.

C + O2 → CO2 + Heat
A large amount of heat is released in this process hence it is an exothermic reaction.

If there is insufficient amount of oxygen , then carbon monoxide will be formed.

2C + O2 → 2CO
The amount of heat released is very less so it can simply considered as combination reaction.
