Question

17. What will be the work done by the string, when a stone is tied to a string and whirled

in a circle?
18. A locomotive exerts a force of 7500N and pulls a train through 1.5 km. How much
work is done by locomotive?

Solution

When a stone whirled in a circular path, the centripetal force acting along the string is always perpendicular to the displacement of the stone. So, the work done is zero.

Force by locomotive, F = 7500 N

Displacement, S = 1.5 km = 1500 m

Work done, W = F.S = 7500 × 1500 = 11250000 J
