Question

20 g of C after a no. of steps totally converted into a compound by reacting with some metallic hydroxides.that compound contains all H as H2O and all C as CO2. this compound is heated and undergoes decomposition.the mass of compound heated is 300 g . suppose the total loss in weight is 120 g. find the % of CO2 and H2O in the compound.

Solution

Carbon reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide which further reacts with metallic hydroxide to form metal carbonate and water.
C + O2 CO2 12g 32g 44g

12g of C forms 44 CO2
20 g of C will form (44/12) x 20 = 73.33 g CO2

CO2 + metal hydroxide metal carbonate + H2OCO2 + metal hydroxide metal carbonate + H2O

Mass of compound (metal carbonate + water) formed = 300 g
When the compound is heated it looses CO2 and water molecules.
Loss in mass = 120g
Therefore, mass of CO2 + H2O = 120 g
Now,
Mass of CO2 in the compound = 73.33g
So, mass of H2O in the compound = 120 -73.33 = 46.67g
% of CO2 = (73.33/300) x 100 = 24.44
% of H2O = (46.67/300) x 100 = 15.55
