Mercury can be obtained from its ore - Cinnabar (HgS) [ Mercuric sulphide].
Extraction involves the following process :

1) First of all. HgS is roasted in air where mercury (II) oxide is formed.
2HgS + 3O₂ $\to$ 2HgO + 2SO₂

2)Then, this HgO is heated to about 300^oC, it decomposes to form mercury metal
2HgO $\overset{h e a t}{\to}$ 2Hg(l) + O₂
