Observations:

1) Crystals of sugar slowly disappear

Reason: Sugar is soluble in water and hence its crystals dissolve when stirred.

2) The overall volume of the solution increases.

Reason: Due to addition of sugar molecules into water there is a overall increase in the volume (Archemedes Principle) of the mixture and the volume is now more than 500 ml
