Question

A BALL OF MASS 100GM FALLS ON A SURFACE FROM THE HEIGTH OF 9M.IF THE COEFFICIENT OF RESTITUATION IS 0.5,WHAT IS THE TOTAL DISTANCE COVERED BY THE BALL BEFORE COMING TO REST.

Solution

Hello,

The Coefficient of Restitution (e) can be described as the ratio of the initial speed of approach to the speed of separation after collision.

Mathematically, its can be represented as

e = vf/vi

here

vf is the velocity of separation and viis the velocity of approach.

A very simple formula can be used to calculate the horizontal distance (x) covered, as stated below

x = h + 2e2h + 2e4h + 2e6h + _ _ _

here

h is the initial height of the ball, equal to 9 metres

and e is equal to 0.5

Substituting the values as per the question in the above equation, we can calculate the total distance travelled

x = 14.7 meters
