Question

A block of mass 0.1 kg is held against a wall by applying a horizontal force of F=5N. If the coefficient of friction between the wall and the block is 0.5, find the magnitude of frictional force on the block.

Open in App
Solution

The gravitational force acting on the block in vertical directional is balanced by frictional force
the down wards force is = mg = 0.1 x 10 (approx) = 1 N
the frictional force in upward direction will be f = μ F = 0.5 x 5 = 2.5N
hence the value of frictional force is 2.5 N in upward direction.
