Assuming the total distance covered is " 2x "

first x with velocity 40m/s
the second x with velocity 50 m/s

Time to cover first x = x/40

time taken to cover the second half = x/50

Total time taken = x/40 + x/50 = 9x/200

Average velocity = total distance covered / total time taken

= 2x*200 / 9s

= 400/9 = 44.4 m/s
