Question

A body is released from a certain height above the surface of the earth. what happens to its potential energy?

Solution

Hi Prajwalraturi!

When a body is held at a height above the surface of the earth, it possesses gravitational potential energy. The potential energy is given by P.E = mgh, where, m is the mass of the body, g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2) and h is the height. As the body is released, its height decreases at each moment. So, the instantaneous potential energy also decreases.

Cheers!!
