Question

A compound AB2 possess CAF2 type crystal structure. write coordination no of A2+ and B-

Coordination no of each type of ions in rock salt type crystal structure

Open in App
Solution

Calcium fluoride has cubic structure, where each Ca2+ ion (cation) is surrounded by eight F- ion and each F- ion (anion) is surrounded by four Ca2+ ions. So the coordination number of Ca2+ is eight and coordination number of F- is four.
Therefore in case of AB2 (which have similar crystal structure with CaF2), coordination number of A2+ is eight and coordination number of B- is four.

Rock salt has cubic crystal structure. Here Na+ and Cl- have FCC (Face Centered Cubic) structure. Both cation and anion is surrounded by six oppositely charged ions. So the coordination number of each Na+ (cation) and Cl- (anion) is six.
