Question

a compound X is formed by the reaction fo a carboxylic acid C2H4O2and an alcohol in presence of a few drops of H2SO4.the alcohol on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4followed by acidification gives the same carboxylic acid as used in this reacation . give the name and structures of the (a) carboxylic acid,(b)alcohol and (c) compound X.also write the reaction.

Solution

Mol. formula of acid = C2H4O2

As it isan acid -COOH group has to be present, subtracting it from above formula we get = CH3

Therefore the acid is CH3COOH

The alcohol on oxidation is said to give the above acid, reducing it sequentially will give us ethanal and then, the alcohol ethanol = C2H5OH

CH3COOH + C2H5OH -------> CH3COOC2H5

Acetic Acid and alcohol will form ester ethyl acetate
