Question

A container contains a fixed amount of gas at 27 degree celcius. If the temperature of the container is increased to 77 degree celcius , what fraction of gas will be expelled?

Solution

Dear student!

When amount is fixed, i.e n = constant,

PV = RT

Or T is directly proportional to V(volume)

So, V1 / T1 = V2 / T2 ,

Here, T1 = 27 + 237 K =300K and, T2 = 273+77 = 350 K

or, V1 / V2 = T2 / T1 = 350/ 300 = 1.16

Hence, the fraction of gas expelled will be , V2 = V1 / 1.16 = 0.82V1
