Question

A copper wire has diameter 00.5mm and resistivity of 1,6x10.8m. What will be the length of this wire to make its resistance 10 ohm. How does the resistance change if the diameter is doubled.

Open in App
Solution

Here,

Diameter, d = 0.5 mm = 0.0005 m

Resistivity, q = 1×10-8 Ωm

Resistance, R = 10 Ω

Length = L

Now,

R = qL/A

=> L = AR/q

=> L = (πd2/4)R/q

=> L = (3.14×0.00052/4)(10)/(1×10-8)

=> L = 196.25 m

If diameter is doubled resistance becomes half.
