Question

A cuboid of mass 2.0 kg and dimensions 2 cm X 5 cm X 25 cm is placed on a table to exert pressure on its surface. If the value of g=10m/s2. Find the maximum and minimum pressures exerted by the cuboid respectively.

Open in App
Solution

Dimensions of cuboid =2cm×5cm×25cm =0·02m×0·05m×0·25m
Mass =
2Kg
Force =
mass ×acceleration =2 × 10 =20N
Pressure=Force/Area(in contact with table)
Minimum pressure is exerted by cuboid when it is placed along its length so that there is maximum surface area in contact with the table. For maximum pressure, the cuboid should be placed in such a way that there is minimum surface area of contact.
Pmin=20/(
0·05m×0·25m) =20/0·0125 =1600N/m2
Pmax=20/(0·05m×0·02m) =20/0·001 =20000N/m2
