Solution

Simple interest =P×R×T100=P×r100×n(n+1)2×12Now principal is given as Rs 1200 and r=9% and interest = Rs 5994Let the number of installments be nHence putting these values we get5994 =1200×9100×n(n+1)2×12n(n+1) =5994×2×12×1001200×9n(n+1) =1332n2+n-1332 =0n2+37n-36n-1332=0n(n+37)-36(n+37)=0(n-36)(n+37)=0n=-37 or 36As number of installments cannot be negative Hence number of installments paid = 36

Derivation of the expression for total time

Let the monthly installment be P and number of installments be n and rate of interest be r%per annumNow interest is calculated on first installment for n months,on second installment for (n-1)months..........,on last installment for 1 monthHence this forms an A.P whose sum = n+(n-1)+(n-2)+(n-3)......+2+1Hence total time = sum of the A.P = n(n+1)2months= n(n+1)2×12 yearsInterest = p×r×t100=p×r×n(n+1)100×2×12
