The electropositive character increases down the group.
Electropositivity is the ability of an element to lose electrons. As the number of shells increase on going down the group, the valence electrons are not strongly held and can be removed more easily.

Valency remains the same on going down the group. Valency is the combining capacity of an element is is determined by the number of valence electrons. Number of valence electrons are the same for all members of a group.

Across a period, valency first increases by a unit of one and then decreases. Group 1 and 17 have a valency of one, group 2 and group16 have a valency of 2.
