Solution

(a) The yellowish white powder of calcium which is used in disinfecting drinking water is bleaching powder. It is chemically known as calcium oxychloride, and is represented by the chemical formula CaOCl2. It is produced by the action of chlorine on dry slaked lime [Ca(OH)2]. Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 → CaOCl2 + H2O

(b) Both the given chemical compounds are salts, which can be prepared by the action of an acid and a base.

(i) NaNO3

The name of this salt is sodium nitrate. It can be prepared by the action of sodium hydroxide (chemical formula NaOH) and nitric acid (chemical formula HNO3). Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

NaOH + HNO3 → NaNO3 + H2O

(ii) K2SO4

The name of this salt is potassium sulphate. It can be prepared by the action of potassium hydroxide and sulphuric acid. Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

2KOH + H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2H2O
