Question

A lamp rated at 1002 - 220 vsupply and another lamp rated at 150 w - 220 supply are connected in series across 220v. supply calculate the respective voltageacross each lamp and also power consumption. What will be the total power is the two lamps are connected in parallel across 220 volt supply.

Solution

Given,
P1=100 WV1=220 VP2=150WV2=220 VUsing P=V2RP1=V12R1 Or R1=V12P1=220×220100 =484 ohmSimilarly,R2=V22P2=220×220150=22×443=9683=322.7 ohmIf lamps are connected in series,Resultant resistance, R= R1+ R2=484+322.7=806.7 ohmTotal power,P=V2R=220×220806.7=59.9 WIf lamps are connected in parallel,Resultant resistance, R=R1R2R1+R2=484×9683484+9683=193.6 OhmTotal power,P=220×220193.6=250 W
