Question

A magnet falls through a coil, will its acceleration equal to acceleration due to gravity? What will be the answer if the coil has the cut? Explain.

Solution

No, the acceleration of the magnet will be less than the acceleration due to gravity. According to Lenz's law a current will induce in the coil which opposes the motion(falling) of the magnet.

if the coil has the cut then no current will induce in the coil then the acceleration of the magnet will be equal to acceleration due to gravity.
