Solution

Suppose, the man’s total displacement is S.
And suppose his total time of travel is T.
He travels for time T/2 with velocity v₁. The displacement is = v₁ × T/2
Next T/2 time he travels at v₂. The displacement is = v₂ × T/2
So, S = v₁ × T/2 + v₂ × T/2 = (T/2)(v₁ + v₂)
Average velocity = S/T = (T/2)(v₁ + v₂)/T = (v₁ + v₂)/2
