Question

a plane mirror is moving with velocity 4i+5j+8k. a point object in front of the mirror moves with a velocity 3i+4j+5k. here k is normal to plane mirror and facing towards object. velocity of image is?

Solution

A plane mirror is perpendicular to k, so the component of velocity gets inverted. i and j components will not be affected by the velocity of the mirror even when there is velocity for the mirror in those components.
Now for the k component, when the mirror is not moving the velocity is -5k
while when mirror is moving, it adds velocity of 8*2k =16 k
Therefore, the resultant velocity of the particle is 16k - 5k = 11 k i.e.,
v = 3i + 4j + 11k
