Question

A STAR CONVERTS ALL ITS HYDROGEN INTO HELIUM. IT THEN CONVERTS HELIUM TO CARBON VIA THE REACTION:

3 4He2 TO12C6 + 7.27 MeV

THE MASS OF THE STAR IS 5*1032kg AND IT GENERATES ENERGY AT THE RATE OF 5*1030 W. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO CONVERT ALL THE HELIUM INTO CARBON AT THIS RATE?

Solution

4 gm of He=6.023×1023 He atoms5×1032 kg of He=6.023×10234×10-3×5×1032=7.52875×1058 He atoms
Now total energy can be produced by the star,
=13×7.52875×1058×7.27 MeV=13×7.52875×1058×7.27×1.6×10-13 J=29.2×1045 J
So the star will live for,
=29.2×1045 5×1030 sec=5.84×1015 sec=5.84×101560×60×24×365years=185×106 years
