Question

a stone is being whirled in a circle flies off tangentially when the string suddenly stops- give reason for this

Open in App
Solution

The tension on the string provides the centripetal force to the stone during the revolution and the fictitious force, the centrifugal force, acts opposite to the centripetal force. When the string breaks, there is no centripetal force or centrifugal force. The stone continues its motion due to inertia. And this motion is along a tangent to the circular path.
