Question

A stone tied at the end of a string is whirled in a circle. In which direction will the stone flies away, if the string breaks? Why?

Solution

A stone moving in a circly is constantly being accelerated towards the center due to the tension force of the string. If the string is not there to bring the stone towards a circular path, the stone will no longer have any acceleration towrads the center and move in a straight line, or the tangential path to the circle at the point where the string has broken.
