Question

A train is travelling with a speed of 90 km/hr.The brakes are applied so as to produce a uniform accelaration of -0.5 m/s.Find how far the train goes before it is brought to rest.

Open in App
Solution

Initial velocity, u = 90 km/h = 90(5/18) m/s = 25 m/s

Acceleration, a = -0.5 m/s2

Using,

v2 = u2 + 2as

=> 0 = 252 – 2(0.5)s

=> s = 625 m

The train travels 625 m before coming to rest.
