Question

A U-tube contains water and methylated spirit separated by mercury. The mercury columns in the two arms are in level with 10.0 cm of water in one arm and 12.5 cm of spirit in the other then find difference in the height of mercury column?

Solution

Density of methylated spirit is 0.8 gm/cc.
Let the height of the mercury column in contact with the water is h1

Let the height of the mercury column in contact with the spirit is h2
So,
Pressure due to water column+Pressure due to mercury=Pressure due to spirit column+Pressure due to mercury10×1×g+h1×13.6×g=12.5×0.8×g+h1×13.6×gh1-h2=0
Diffrence betwwen the mercury levels is zero.
