Question

A water insoluble calcium compund (A) on reacting with dil. H2SO4 released a colourless and odourless gas, (B) with brisk effervescence .when gas B is passed through lime water,it turns milky and again formed a compound A. identify A,B and write a balanced chemical equation for the same.

Solution

Point-1
CO2 (Carbon dioxide) is the gas which turns lime water milky

Point-2
Lime water turns milky due to the formation of calcium carbonate as shown in the given equation below.

Reaction involved-
CaCO3 + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + H2O + CO2

Inference-

A = Calcium carbonate (CaCO3 )
B = Carbon dioxide (CO2) .

Another equation for the reaction of lime water with carbon dioxide gas-

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
