Question

According to principle of energy efficiency, power input is not equal to power output but in the situation of transformer according to law of conservation of energy power input = power output. Explain this contradiction?

Solution

Transformer obeys the law of conservation of energy. In a transformer, energy is not increased or decreased. It is only the voltage or current that changes. The input power and output power of the transformer are almost same. (Actually, the output power is less than the input power, due to the losses in the transformer). If the transformer is a step up transformer, the output voltage is more than that of the input voltage, but output current is less. So, the power remains constant (ignoring loss). There is no creation or destruction of energy takes place in a transformer.
