According to the characteristic of matter all particles of matter are continuous in motion, so if the particles in solid is in motion, how can we say it a solid since solids are rigids and have less intermolecular space ?
At any temperature above the absolute zero the energy for random motion of particles of molecular and atomic level is provided by thermal energy from the surrounding. The particles absorb the thermal energy and vibrate at a very fast rate and also move from one point to another, thereby colliding with other particles and transferring energy and momentum to other particles.
Whether it is a solid, liquid or gas; every particle of matter shows this random motion. In solids the motion is vibrational and the amplitude is small so a solid substance is observed to be fixed and hard. While in fluids this motion is large and they don’t have any fixed shape.
