Question

According to the formula V=IR, Potential Difference is directly proportional to Current. But according to P=VI (P/I=V) Potential Difference is inversely proportional to Current. What is the cause of contradiction and what is the true fact?

Solution

Acc. to ohm's law,

V = IR , where R is a constant.

⇒ V ∝ I

P = VI

⇒ V = P/I

⇒ Potential difference (V) is given by the ratio of P and I. Here P is not a constant. As current is varied so does the voltage and hence the power.
