Question

account for the following:

(a) for the same mass of a substance, the volume occupied by a gasis maximum.

(b) Inspite of being compressible, sponge is a solid.

(c) Tea or coffee is sipped from a saucer when it is quite hot.

(d) Liquids have higher density than gases.

Solution

1. This is due to the fact that gases have the least molecular attraction and the molecules in a gas are located very far off from each other.

2. The compressible nature of the sponge is due to the pores that are present the molecules in a sponge are tightly bound together and do not compress. When the applied force from sponge is withdrawn it resumes its original shape and therefore sponge is a solid.

4. The density of a substance is derived by dividing its mass by its volume. Gases have a lower density compared to liquids because their particles are more spaced out and therefore occupy more volume as compared to liquids.

Try and do the rest by yourself.
