Question

although zinc is more reactive than iron but still we use zinc for the galvanization of iron ??

acc. to the activity series of metals zinc is more reactive than iron so instead of preventing iron from rusting zinc would have reacted more but it is not like this. why?

Solution

Zinc metal is generally used for protecting iron and the process is called galvanization. In this method, surface of iron is covered with layer of more active metal like zinc. Being more reactive Zinc metal loses electrons (undergoes oxidation) first in compare to iron and hence,iron remains unreactive towards atmospheric oxygen and moisture. This prevents the rusting of iron.
