Question

An aqueous solution of metal nitrate X react

s with sodium bromide solution to form yellowprecipitate of compound Y which is used in photography. Y on exposure to sunlight, undergoesdecomposition reaction to form metal present in Xalong with orangish brown gas. Identify X andY and write chemical equations for the reactionsinvolved.

Solution

Compound which is used in photography is AgBr (Y) which is yellow in colour.
So the metal nitrate should be AgNO3 (X) which on reaction with NaBr form AgBr.
AgNO3 + NaBr AgBr + NaNO3
AgBr undergoes decomposition reaction in presence sunlight and form silver metal and bromine gas. Br2 is orangish-brown gas.
2AgBr sunlight 2Ag + Br2

Thus , X = AgNO3
Y = AgBr
Orangish-brown gas = Br2
