(a) Valency is the combining capacity of an element.In the given compounds, 1 atom of Z combines with 3 atoms of hydrogen ( monovalent) in ZH3, 3 atoms of chlorine(monovalent) in ZCl3, 3/2 atoms of oxygen (divalent) in Z2O3 and 1 atom of phosphorus (trivalent) in ZP.Therefore, the valency of Z is 3.

(b) Z is a metal
