Question

An object is dropped from rest at a height of 150 m and simultaneouslyanother object is dropped from rest at a height 100 m. What is the differencein their heights after 2 s if both the objects drop with same accelerations?How does the difference in heights vary with time?

Solution

Here,

h1 = 150 m

h2 = 100 m

t = 2 s

a = g

Displacement by the first body direction downwards is taken negative

y1 = y01 - ut - ½gt2

u = 0, y01 = 150

=> y1 = 150 - ½gt2

Displacement of the second body

u = 0, y02 = 100 m

=> y2 = 100 - ½gt2

y2 – y1 = 150 – 100 = 50

After t = 2 the difference is 50 m

The difference in height is constant with time when both of the bodies are in air.
