Question

An object of mass 'm' when raised to height 'h' possess a potential energy of 1200J. Find the new potential energy: (a)if the same object is raised to height 'h'/4 (b)if the same object is raised to height 4'h'

Solution

According to the question, the potential energy at height h of mass m is,
PE=mgh=1200 J
(i) When the same object is raised to height h4 then the new potential energy of the object will be,
PE1=mgh4PE1=mgh4PE1=PE4
On substituting the values we get,
PE1=1200 J4PE1=300 J

(ii) If the same object is raised to height 4h, then the new potential energy of the object will be,
PE2=mg4hPE2=4mghPE2=4×PE
On substituting the values we get,
PE2=4×1200 JPE2=4800 J
