Question

an organic compound A on heating with concentrated sulphuric acid forms a compound B which on addition of one mole of hydrogen in presence of Nickel forms a compound C. one mole of this compound on combustion forms three moles of CO2 and three moles of H2O. identify the compounds A , B C write the chemical equations of the reactions involved.

Solution

Plz. check your question as compound C on combustion should give 2 moles of CO2 and 3 moles of H2O.

Accordingly, following is the answer.

Compound C on combustion should give 2 moles of CO2 and 3 moles of H2O.Therfore, its molecular formula should be C2H6 and the compound is ethane.
Compound C is formed is addition of 1 mole of H2 to B .Therefore, the molecular formula of B should be C2H4 and the compound is ethene.
Compound b is formed by heating compound A with conc. sulphuric acid which is a dehydrating agent. So, compound A should be C2H5OH (ethanol).
The reactions are as follows:
C2H5OH conc. sulphuric acidCH2=CH2 (A) (B)CH2=CH2 +H2 NiCH3-CH3 (B) (C)CH3-CH3 + 72O2 2CO2 + 3 H2O (C)
