Question

An uncharged insulated conductor A is brought near a charged insulated conductor B.What happens to charge and potential of B?

Open in App
Solution

When an uncharged insulated conductor A is brought near a charged insulated conductor B, there is no change in the charge on B, it remains unchanged. But when we see the conductor A, an equal and opposite charge is induced on the side of A near the charged conductor B.

The Potential of B will be sum of Potential of B due to its charge and Potential of A due to the induced charge. Now as the induced charge is opposite in nature therefore , the net potential of B decreases.
