Question

Are ionisation potential and Ionisation energy same?

Open in App
Solution

Ionisation energy is the energy required to remove the outermost electron from an isolated gaseous atom. Ionisation potential is the same as ionisation energy. Both are a measure of the energy required to remove the valence electron. The difference between the two is that while ionisation energy is expressed in kJoulemol-1 or eV , while the ionisation potential is expressed in terms of Volts

Ionisation Potential= E/e Volts, Where E = ionisation energy and e = electronic charge
