Are lungs and alveoli designed in a similar manner to increase the area for exchange of gases?
Lungs usually have sponge like soft texture which is due to the presence of several small sac like structures called alveoli. These alveoli are tightly wrapped by blood capillaries where exchange of gases takes place. It is the alveoli that can increase the surface area and allow gases to exchange. Due to the expansion of these alveoli the epithelial membranes of lungs also expand to provide space.
