Are there distinct name for nerves? Which is the major nerve that connects brain and spinal cord?

Nerves have distinct names like vagus, glossopharyngeal etc. The spinal cord is a cylinder of nervous tissue running from the base of the brain down the back, its a direct connection between the brain and spinal cord, as such there is no particular nerve fibre that can be credited for this.
