Question

As it is written in our Chapter Reproductive System that Oestrogens are secreted by Corpus Luetum prior to Ovulation. But my question is that Corpus Luetum is released during the process of Ovulation, then how this hormone (oestrogen) is secreted prior to ovulation?

Solution

I would like to rectify you.

The corpus luteum does not secrete eostrogen, but secretes large amounts of progesterone which is essential for maintenance of the endometrium. They are formed after ovulation. They are not released, egg is released from graafian follicle.

Corpus luteum is a mass of cells which is formed after an egg is released from Graffian follicle. The remains of the Graffian follicles get converted into the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone for the maintenance of the endometrium. This prepares endometrium for implantation of the fertilized ovum and other events of pregnancy.

Estrogen is secreted prior to ovulation because they are secreted by developing follicles in the ovary. Estrogen is also secreted by placenta.

Functions of estrogen:-

  • It brings about the secondary sexual characters.
  • Growth and functioning of the female secondary sex organs
