Question

At what pH of HCl solutions will hydrogen electrode show a potential of -0.177V at 298K,1 bar pressure?

Open in App
Solution

At anode,

H2→2H+ +2e-

Eanode= E°anode-(0.0591/2)log [H+] 2

anode = 0 at standard temperature and pressure

Eanode= 0.177

-0.177x2/0.0591x2=log[H+]

pH= - log[H+]= 0.354/0.118

pH=3
